Bite by Bite: Sustainable Eats
Bite by Bite: Sustainable Eats is a WEDU PBS original series exploring the vital connection between food, agriculture, and the environment. From sustainable seafood to plant-based diets to reducing food waste, host Dalia Colón talks about food, naturally, to help you learn how everyday decisions can impact our planet while fostering hope and action.
Branding
As part of WEDU PBS’ overarching SUSTAIN project team from the very beginning, I got to create the branding and design for the new sustainable eating series, Bite by Bite: Sustainable Eats. This digital series would be housed under WEDU’s SUSTAIN umbrella, but have its own logos and landing page and aesthetic elements.
The team wanted “fun but not too quirky, eco-conscious and sustainability vibe, and legible at all sizes and on all screens.”
Sandbox
With no formal brief to be had, I was nevertheless in a pretty good spot to start sketching, since I’d been involved with the Bite by Bite series project from its inception, and was familiar with its outline at this stage. With that bit of direction from the team, I started right in on ‘sketches’ in Illustrator…
Logos
As this is for a digital series, the branding needs are a little different than traditional print boundaries, and require a more versatile deck of logos for vertical and horizontal orientation videos and more. Other artists and freelancers hired by WEDU PBS need to be able to work quickly when recording, producing, and editing, and therefore need a good variety of options for attaching the logo to Bite by Bite pieces for all manner of different social channels and other uses.
Color palette
I worked with the Executive Producer of the series on color trials and we narrowed it down in just a few rounds back and forth.

Since there were many moving parts in the Bite by Bite: Sustainable Eats series, I made a quick style guide to make clear the general points of the branding, for use by other artists and creators who were involved in the series.
Print advertising
External publication ads
WEDU placed several ads I designed in local print and digital publications, like these two half-page ads that ran in Tampa Bay Magazine.
WEDU Premiere Magazine ads
I also periodically designed some other print ads for WEDU PBS Premiere Magazine to increase awareness of the primarily digital series to WEDU’s print readership of almost 50,000 members. I created ads of various dimensions as each destination space required. Pictured here are two spreads from October and June 2024 featuring Bite by Bite ads I designed.
Digital design assets
I played a minimal role in digital assets creation for the actual videos and reels in the series, but other people at WEDU used my style guide to ensure consistency in their own graphics and videos.
Motion graphics
While I don’t do much motion graphics work, I do love working in After Effects whenever I get a chance. For this digital series intro, I edited a starter template we purchased, tailoring it to match the branding I’d created.
